The Grammy voting system still mystifies me. I'd expect ''Beautiful,'' a show about Carole King, to win over ''Gentlemen's Guide.''

Obviously, Cyndi Lauper would win for ''Kinky Boots,'' just as Billie Joe Armstrong won for ''American Idiot.''

Grammy voters know them. Ditto for Elton John winning for ''Aida,'' or Duncan Sheik prevailing for ''Spring Awakening.''

But I'm surprised that a revival of ''The Color Purple'' would win over ''Waitress,'' which was written by 5-time Grammy nominee Sara Bareilles.

Do Grammy voters vote for the most recognizable title? At least 5 cast recordings of ''West Side Story'' have been Grammy nominated.

Meantime, new shows that won the Tony for Best Score, like ''Next to Normal'' and ''Memphis,'' couldn't even get nominated for a Grammy.

Last year, the ''She Loves Me'' CD got rave reviews, but also got skunked by the Grammys. (But the original 1964 album actually won!)
