We saw the second preview and our group had mixed feelings about it but overall thoroughly enjoyed the evening. We all had a different level of understanding of Titus, Shakespeare, etc. It would behoove someone to have read Titus before going into it; or at least the SparkNotes, because a lot more of it will make sense and how they attack the humor will make sense. Otherwise, as one friend put it, it's just an evening of fart and dick jokes...very base.

However, that's where the real brilliance arises. I left feeling like I had seen a brand new Ionesco or Beckett play. The play of the base and the absurd against the realities of our world and the questions we should be asking each other about power and balance and control and care. Carol's inherent racism and how that shades her opinion of the events; Gary's desire for forward movement but only so far because of what he is deserving of and what he's willing to do or give up to achieve it; and Janice who feels the status quo is what keeps us all alive but in the end, will it? Can it? These are the questions theater should force us to ask and Gary does that in a way we haven't really seen in a very long time.

It's not going to be everyone's cup of tea - people sure did get up and leave about 45 minutes into it...and that's ok. Theater should challenge us and make us question the why. Kudos to Taylor Mac!
