Back to Back Kings, One Delivers, the Other Meh

By coincidence, I happened to see matinees of King Lear and King Kong within days of each other. Sam Gold’s production of Lear is an atrocity. What’s with the duct tape, gun, actor’s signing, an inappropriate Glass score, uneven performances, et al? Jackson is diminished by the mess. Kong, on the other hand, delivers on spectacle. Sure the score is pedestrian, but the puppet and puppeteers are great fun, the two male leads are pros and coming in at just over two hours, the show entertains. A last minute rush seat for $49 snagged me a ticket 5th row center aisle orchestra.
