Surprise! SAG nominations are nearly tone-deaf to movie musicals

In a year with a bumper crop of movie musicals, only Ariana DeBose (''West Side Story'') and Andrew Garfield (''tick .... tick ... BOOM!'') got SAG nominated. Shockingly, no ''West Side Story'' for Outstanding Ensemble in a Motion Picture (and to a lesser extent, ''In the Heights''). No Rachel Zegler, who just won a Golden Globe. (But Jennifer Hudson was nominated for ''Respect,'' her biopic of Aretha Franklin.) No Peter Dinklage in ''Cyrano'' or Anthony Ramos in ''In the Heights'' - both Globe nominees. No surprise nominations for Rita Moreno or Robin de Jesus.

Did the SAG nominators not consider performances in movie musicals ''real'' acting? ;)

Much better news for ''West Side Story'' today at the long lists for the BAFTAs (British Academy Awards).

It led all movies with 15 mentions, including Zegler, DeBose and Moreno, plus David Alvarez and Mike Faist.

BAFTA uses its long lists to narrow the actual 5 nominees per category, and they'll be announced Feb. 3.
